Synthwave is a very recent genre. It appeared at the beginning of the 2010s, and is very inspired by the 80s (music from films of the time, new wave ...). The sounds are therefore quite electronic, with a synth and a drum machine. It's a pretty retro-futuristic atmosphere but there are also very modern elements and techniques.
Synthwave is a fairly broad term: bands can have extremely different moods and be called the same way.
Synthwave bands generally cited are Carpenter Brut, Kavinsky or Eletric Youth, but Boy Harsher could also be described as a synthwave band (halfway between dark wave and synthwave to be more precise). Berlin Taxi is another synthwave band worth listening to, as are Simulated Youth and Sexy Sushi.
