ETHEREAL

Ethereal is also called ethereal wave/darkwave/goth. It is part of the darkwave genre, and therefore emerged in the 80s.
You recognize an ethereal song by the use of a distorted guitar, usually with a minor key. The bassline sounds like a typical post-punk bassline, and the vocals are often feminine and high-pitched. There are often drum machines. The lyrics are quite mysterious and the overall aesthetic revolves around romanticism.
Shoegaze comes from ethereal wave.
Famous bands that can be described as ethereal bands are: Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil or Dead Can Dance.
