Dark wave is a musical genre that emerged in the late 1970s alongside new wave, cold wave and post-punk. Typical instruments used are usually a synth, a drum machine, and sometimes a bass and guitar.
Since the movement has evolved alongside post-punk and new wave, it can be said that dark wave has similar characteristics to both genres. One can find the dark atmosphere of post-punk and goth rock, with elements of synthpop - electro sounds, usually with a synth. The lyrics are often melancholy and gloomy.
