INDUSTRIAL

Mid 70s

Industrial music appeared in the mid-1970s. Sounds are generally harsh, "industrial" (hard to describe otherwise). The general atmosphere does not reflect an impression of a "clean" music, but almost distorted. Traditional instruments are modified or played in unconventional ways (Throbbing Gristle and the Gristle-izer). The voices can also be changed electronically.
The aim of industrial music was originally to criticize modern society, without idealizing past society.
Prominent industrial bands are Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy, Einstürzende Neubauten or NIN (which are not always considered industrial though).
